Trademarks & IP
Mattar Law Firm provides comprehensive intellectual property protection services in Lebanon, assisting individuals, entrepreneurs, and corporations with trademark registration, patent filing, copyright protection, and IP enforcement. Lebanon is party to the Paris Convention, the Berne Convention, and the TRIPS Agreement, facilitating cross-border recognition of IP rights.
Trademarks
Trademarks are distinctive signs used to differentiate products and services in the marketplace. Registration is made through the Office of Intellectual Property at the Ministry of Economy and Trade, and protection lasts for 10 years, renewable for successive 10-year periods. Foreign applicants must appoint a local representative. Enforcement mechanisms include criminal proceedings, civil litigation, and customs cooperation to prevent counterfeit imports.
Patents
Lebanon enacted patent protection legislation in 2000. An invention qualifies if it is novel, inventive, and industrially applicable. Patents are granted for 20 years from the filing date, with ownership rights held by the inventor. Applications are submitted to the Ministry of Economy and Trade.
Copyrights
A modern Copyright Law took effect June 6, 1999, protecting literary works, artistic creations, software, and video productions. Protection arises automatically upon creation — registration is optional but useful as evidence in disputes. The law provides for both criminal and civil remedies against infringement.
Additional Protections
- Industrial Designs — Protect the ornamental or aesthetic aspects of manufactured products
- Trade Secrets — Protect confidential business information including formulas, processes, and client lists
